WHAT IS SIBO?

SIBO means Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth, a condition where there is too much bacteria in the small intestine.

RISK FACTORS FOR SIBO

Some possible causes of SIBO are: intestinal motility disorders, gastric surgery, injury or structural issues in the small intestine, diabetes, Crohn’s disease, chronic pancreatitis, immune disorders, poor diet, inactivity, and chronic use of certain medications that reduce stomach acid.

SYMPTOMS AND COMPLICATIONS OF SIBO

There are many possible symptoms of SIBO: abdominal pain and discomfort, increased gas and bloating, chronic watery diarrhea, constipation, burning upper belly pain, and indigestion.

There are several possible complications if you have SIBO: high risk for nutritional deficiencies, weight loss, and occasional or frequent abdominal discomfort.

DIET AND LIFESTYLE RECOMMENDATIONS

–Eat mindfully and chew food thoroughly.
–Allow 3-5 hours between meals and snacks.
–Modify or reduce high-carbohydrate foods.
–Increase daily body movement with low to moderate intensity exercise like walking, yoga and Thai Chi.
