HOW TO AVOID HOLIDAY WEIGHT GAIN

START THE DAY OFF WITH EXERCISE

Exercising in the morning can help ensure healthier behaviors during the day. If you exercise in the morning, you will not only tend to move more the rest of the day, but you also are more likely to avoid tempting food compared with days without morning exercise.

LEARN TO SAY NO

During the holidays it can sometimes feel like you are constantly surrounded by tempting foods. You need to say no sometimes and choose what treats you really enjoy to avoid excessive calories.

DO NOT BRING HOME LEFTOVERS

Often it is not the holiday meal that leads to weight gain, but the several days of leftovers afterwards.

STAY HYDRATED WITH NON-CALORIE DRINKS

Sometimes when you are thirsty it seems you are hungry. By staying hydrated, you are better able to eat in moderation and control portion sizes.

AVOID DRINKING YOUR CALORIES

Limit juices and sodas, and if having alcoholic beverages, choose red wine or mixed drinks with calorie-free mixers.

EAT SLOWLY

It takes approximately 20 minutes for your brain to know you are full and satisfied. By slowing down your pace of eating, you give your body the time it needs to recognize when you are comfortably full.

MAKE HEALTH A YEAR-LONG PRIORITY

Your weight and your overall health should be a year-round priority, and not just a temporary New Year’s Resolution.
