SIX TIPS FOR DINING OUT PRUDENTLY
(1) Have a piece of fruit or other small snack about an hour before going out to eat. This can prevent arriving at a restaurant overly hungry, which is when you may order more than you need, which can lead to overeating.
(2) Be curious about the menu. Feel free to ask your waiter how a food is prepared, or what kind of substitutes can be swapped for a menu item. Most restaurants are happy to substitute vegetables, soup or salad for an unwanted side dish such as French fries.
(3) Share the main course with your dining partner. Many restaurant entrees are larger than a single serving for one person. Splitting your meal with someone can help make portions more appropriate, while also saving money at the same time.
(4) Be careful about beverage choices. Sugary drinks like soda or juice can add a lot of unnecessary calories to your meal. Stick with water, seltzer or diet drinks. Also remember that alcoholic beverages can add extra calories, and many cocktails often include juice or soda in them for extra flavor (and extra calories).
(5) Practice eating slowly. It usually takes at 20 to 30 minutes to start feeling full. Eating slower will also allow you to savor the textures and flavors of your food.
(6) Take home leftovers. If you notice that you are getting full, feel free to ask your waiter for a takeout container so you can save the extra portion for another day.
