FOOD AND MOOD

What we eat can affect our mood. Here are some ways that our food can affect our mood.

IMPACT ON OUR DIGESTIVE TRACT

The bacteria that live in our digestive tract (our microbiome) influence the production of the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine. These chemical messengers are often referred to as the feel-good or happy hormones, because they tend to produce feelings of contentment, motivation, and reward. To help create a healthy biome eat minimally processed whole foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables, fermented foods such as yogurt and tempeh, and high-fiber whole grains such as oats.

IMPACT ON OUR BRAIN

Omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins D and K, and magnesium can improve cognitive function as well as mood. Keep your brain healthy with anti-inflammatory foods such as salmon, walnuts, berries, leafy green vegetables, and nuts and seeds.

IMPACT ON OUR BLOOD SUGAR

High or low blood sugar can cause irritability, confusion, or anxiousness. To keep blood sugar levels stable, aim to eat regular, balanced meals that include wholesome carbohydrates like brown rice, sweet potato, and fruit.
